Introduced in 1944, following successful initial testing during the battle of Anzio in January, it replaced the unsatisfactory M-1941 jacket. Its design was considered so effective it was only slightly reworked in later decades, resulting in the M-1965 jacket.
Made in a cotton sateen, it has a light sheen, with two chest pockets and two hip pockets, storm-flap neck closure, concealed front buttons and a removable hood. The cuffs have a bellow which ensures a snug fit around the wrist for warmth.
It was designed to be worn as part of the new layering system, over woollen underwear, shirt, a high-neck jumper and 'Ike' jacket or a wool pile liner.
